Music games for a party
The best music games need almost no setup and let people join in halfway through. These six work for most groups, and a few of them are good with kids and grandparents in the room.

Six games to try
01
Guess the year
Play a song and have everyone call out the year it came out, with the closest guess winning a point. It's good for mixed ages, because everyone knows a different decade best.
02
Name that tune
One person plays the first few seconds of a song, and the first to name it gets the point. Split into teams so that nobody feels left out, and let the winning team pick the next song.
03
Music video bingo
Everyone gets a card of things to spot in the videos, like rain or a big group dance, and five in a row wins. Nobody has to know the songs, which makes this an easy one for Grandma. Our version, Tape Bingo, makes a different card for each phone.
04
Lip sync battle
Two people take turns performing a song while the room votes on who wins. Give them a few minutes to choose, and let hairbrushes count as microphones.
05
Freeze dance
Everyone dances until the music stops, and anyone still moving sits out the next song. This is the one to pick for a kids' party, and it tends to tire them out nicely.
06
Song of the Night
At the end of the party, everyone votes for their favorite song of the evening. It takes a minute, and it gives the group chat something to argue about the next day.

Questions
- What music games work for all ages?
- Music video bingo and guess the year are the easiest for a mixed group. Bingo only asks people to spot things in a video, and guess the year gives each generation a decade where it has the advantage.
- What music games can I play without any setup?
- Name that tune and guess the year need only a phone and a speaker. Freeze dance is just as easy if you have kids in the room and someone willing to press pause.
- What music games work for kids?
- Freeze dance and musical chairs are the classics for younger kids. Printed music video bingo cards work well from about the age they can read the squares, and the first to get five in a row wins.
