What is a power hour?

A power hour is an hour of music where the song changes every minute, so you get through about 60 songs. It started as a drinking game, and making one usually means choosing 60 songs yourself and finding the right minute of each. Audiotape builds the whole thing from one idea and plays it as music videos, so all you have to do is press play.

Questions

How do I make a power hour playlist?
Type your idea into Audiotape, choose a C-60 for 60 songs, and press REC. It takes about five minutes to record, and we'll email you when it's ready. Then you can play it on any TV, laptop or phone.
How many songs are in a power hour?
A classic power hour has 60 songs at about a minute each, which is where the hour comes from. A C-60 tape has 60 songs too, and it runs about an hour.
What are good power hour themes?
A decade is the easiest place to start, like 2000s or 90s hits. You can also go narrower with a genre, a favorite artist, or the songs from a year you and your friends remember. The ideas and the free power hours on this page are good places to look.
Is it free?
Watching is always free, for you and anyone you send the link to, and so is every Audiotape Original. You only pay to record your own tape, which costs $3 for 30 songs or $5 for 60 songs.
Can I play it on my phone or tablet?
Yes. Tapes play in the web browser on any phone, tablet, laptop or TV, so there's nothing to download.
How do I play a power hour on a TV?
An HDMI cable from a laptop is the most reliable way, and the tape fills the screen by itself. You can also cast a Chrome tab, mirror your screen to an Apple TV, or open the tape's short link in the TV's own browser. Once it's playing, everyone in the room can join from their phones.
Do I need an account?
You don't need one to watch, so anyone can open a tape's link and press play. You need an account to record your own tape, and every tape you record stays in your Collection, where it never expires.
Can I make it longer or shorter than an hour?
Yes. A tape can be a C-30 (30 songs, about half an hour), a C-60 (60 songs, about an hour), a C-90 (90 songs, about an hour and a half) or a C-120 (120 songs on two tapes, about two hours).
Can I change how long each song plays?
No. Each song plays for about a minute, apart from the halfway song and the last song, which play all the way through.
Can I choose the songs?
We pick them from your idea, so the more you say, the closer it gets. While it records, you can guess up to three songs you think will make it. Tape Club members can swap and reorder songs afterward.
Can I use my own playlist?
Not yet. We pick the songs from your idea, but you can name the artists and years you want, and the tape will lean toward them.
Can my friends pick songs?
They can suggest them. Send them a request list before the day, then put their favorites in your idea when you record. The tape will lean toward those songs, though a request isn't guaranteed to make it.
Can it play the explicit versions?
Yes. Choose Explicit under Lyrics before you record, and the tape plays a song's official explicit video when there is one. Clean is the default.
Where do the videos come from?
Every song plays its official music video from the artist or their label. When a song has no official video, we use its official visualizer, then an official lyric or audio upload.
Why did you make this?
Audiotape started as music video mixtapes cut by hand in a video editor, one at a time, for friends. Each one took weeks, so we built something that makes one from any idea in about five minutes.
